Meet Michael Doorley, CPA
A licensed Certified Public Accountant, financial civics speaker and writer— dedicated to translating complex federal financial reporting into understandable language and helping Americans and others grasp the federal government's financial position and condition.
Michael Doorley has spent more than four decades as a licensed Certified Public Accountant. He has worked in external and internal audit roles and in CFO, COO, and CAO roles, and creating and managing budgets and financial reporting. But it is a different kind of accounting that drives his civic speaking and writing career — translating the financial statements of the United States Government and conveying their importance to his fellow Americans and others.
Every year, the U.S. Department of the Treasury in coordination with the Office of Management and Budget produces the Financial Report of the United States Government — a comprehensive document covering the nation's assets, liabilities, net position, revenues, costs, bottom line, long-term obligations, and fiscal outlook. It is, in many ways, the most consequential financial report in the world. And almost no one knows about it, and fewer still read it.
Michael reads it cover to cover. And for the past 10 years, he has dedicated a significant part of his professional life to translating its findings into plain language that any engaged citizen can understand.
His presentations are not partisan. They are not alarmist. They are grounded in the government's own numbers, delivered with the calm authority of a seasoned accountant and business executive, and the genuine conviction of someone who believes an informed public is essential to a healthy democracy.
Michael holds an undergraduate degree from Fordham University and a graduate degree from Harvard University.
